Thrilling Thursday!!!

This morning began, with an inner fight on when I should get out of bed, however; I lost the battle and I got up. As always, once I was awake and at school, I was so glad that I came. :)

Despite the CrAzInEsS of Spring Fever in both kids and teachers...today was a very busy day with a lot of new and exciting things going on. Spring picture day was today, so I loved seeing everyone all dressed up.. because you know it only happens twice a year.  (They brush their hair and their teeth! :) haha!)

I took a picture with my co-worker and teaching partner Mr. Juan Gonzalez!! What an AMAZING guy! Working with him and his spunk and ideas makes for a great work environment.

Scientific Breakthrough

Mr. G and I team taught an engaging science lesson on Types of Soil in our school's outdoor classroom!! These kids, although mentally "checked out" for break ,were so engaged!! They loved being outside, collecting the soil sample themselves, and working like real scientists. There is nothing like hands- on, minds- on teaching.

 Students work in order to find the soil sample and then watch it divide and separate into, Sand, Silt, and Clay. They will observe their soil sample the next day to see what happens over a period of time.

Mathtastic game creation!!

I have been battling the fact 8 years olds do not like to be drilled on multiplication facts, and after a 6 month battle. I have finally found a solution to the confusion! I call my solution "Multiplication Slap Jack." The object of the game is to be the one to slap the multiplication equations and solve them first.

When I first thought about it, I was like "Oh No!" Someone is going to lose an eye?! However despite my apprehensiveness, I explained to the students the importance of not slapping other people and they worked so hard to follow this rule in order to continue playing. Games are the way of the future! Make something a game and they will enjoy it a whole lot more! (They don't teach you this in college... haha!)

I love how teachers are able to take a concept and completely change the perspective on it once we change the way that it looks! It is one mind game that we play everyday! I love being in control in that sense. It is a power that I enjoy. Kids have no idea how sneaky we can be as well.

 As the day closes and the sun sets on another great day, I am constantly reminded that as the goin gets tough and the crazy get crazier, there is always some way to make the best out of every situation! I am so thrilled to work in the Texas Public School system and serve the children that I do. They bring out the best in me and I strive to do the same for them each day!

This week in B115 we have been learning more about graphing! This has been a truly eye opening experience for me, for I had a difficult time visualizing exactly how graphing lessons should be in the 3rd grade classroom. I can truly say that the way to increase the level of learning is through word problems. One activity the students did was create their own word problems regarding one graph. It amazed me how when I allowed the "test taker" to also be the "test maker" they thought more in-depth about how they would word the problem and how to word the question. Some students used previous questions that we used in class to emulate the structure of their problem. It's great to see them use their left and right brain in collaboration!

Using Technology for Math

This week, I have recently begun bringing my iPad into the classroom and allowing the students to handle it and use it for learning purposes. It is wonderful how many apps are available to kids for learning. (If only schools had enough money for all students to have a tablet! :) ) Despite the shortage, the students have been great about taking care of mine and using it throughout the day.

Today we used an app for Graphing pie graphs and bar graphs of our class polls! This was a very exciting event for the students. Having a chance to vote and viewing their data in a live graph truly made this information relevant. This was a lot of fun!



In reading, we continue to add more information to our Schema each day! I use reader's notebooks in my classroom in order to supplement instruction. I enjoy these notebooks for they allow students to have a great storage of information that we do together as well as what is done independently. We use them just about weekly in our classroom, expecially during independent reading time, for both poetry and reading. Great comprehension prompts for class or small group. :)

Today we did a creative/descriptive writing activity that went very well! It's amazing what kids can do with a little assistance and a creative mind. I can't wait to do another activity with these kiddos.

I am always looking for new ways to incorporate writing in the early grades, in case others have ideas. I would love to hear them!

Antonym Puzzle Game

Another great thing that was introduced to my kids recently are puzzle games. These are super fun! All I did was go out and purchase a puzzle, trace it on board and add any concept that fit my kids. It was a great thing to see them enjoying the same language or math skills in a puzzle form. This puzzle idea is a positive one for it can be partnered or individually played. The example I have posted is of an antonyms board. This board has one word on the piece and one word in the spot where the piece should go. Students can easily match the words and the picture will begin to show. It is a great thinking game!! I also do this puzzle activity with math concepts.

The Beginning of Something Great!

My name is Kelli Love and I am currently a 3rd grade teacher in the Texas Public School System! I work for some amazing administrators and alongside some awesome teachers. I am truly blessed to teach where I do. This is my 3rd year teaching since I graduated college and I can say it is a challenge worth fighting each day. Children are all exciting and they come with their own individual instructions which makes each day and each year exciting.

I have a very "hands- on" approach to teaching and I enjoy allowing the students to talk about their thinking. Silent mouths could mean a silent mind, therefore I try to open up their mouths in order to open their brains. :)
